15 Windows Command Prompt Commands to Know as Sysadmin

If you are new to using command prompt as a system admin, then I can give you a boost to get started. Although there are hundreds of commands, in this post, I will list some of the most useful ones that system admins commonly use. Network engineers link the world together one device at a time. Having “netconf” in the list was a happy surprise for me. But for this blog post, we’ll stick with the basic objects of link, address, route, and neigh. The ip “addresses” assigned to a host is high on the list of things I know I’ll want to understand. MyLAN Viewer is a NetBIOS and IP address scanner for Windows systems.

If you want to specifically search for MX or NS type, use the syntax below. This command is used in DNS lookup to query the DNS name server. This command can also be used to assign an IP address and Gateway to an interface. However, these details will be reset after the system reboot. This picture shows the IP address of 3 networks, Ethernet, local network, and WLAN. It is one of the most basic commands used in network inspection. Tone Generator — A tone generator is a device that sends an electrical signal through one pair of UTP wires.

If you are having problems communicating with one specific host, you can append the remote host’s IP address to the ARP -A command. The ARP command corresponds to the Address Resolution Protocol. This is where the Address Resolution Protocol comes into play. The tracert command is a Command Prompt command which is used to get the network packet being sent and received and the number of hops required for that packet to reach to target.

What important commands in Windows for network Analyses can you find?

  • ipconfig. Ipconfig is a Console Command which can be issued to the Command Line Interpreter (or command prompt) to display the network settings currently assigned to any or all network adapters in the machine.
  • netstat.
  • tracert.
  • ping.
  • pathping.
  • telnet.
  • ftp.
  • route.

Dynamic allocation of IP addresses is a great advantage for both end-users and network admins. But sometimes you would need to have some control in order to manage and troubleshoot your network more efficiently.

It can let you scan your local network or the Internet-facing IP addresses. ManageEngine OpUtils combines an IP address manager, a switch port mapper for MAC address discovery, and a port scanner to identify open TCP and UDP ports on all devices. This combination delivers all address-related functions that you will need in order to fully manage your network.

What is the DNS lookup command in cmd?

Go to Start and type cmd in the search field to open the command prompt. Alternatively, go to Start > Run > type cmd or command. Type nslookup and hit Enter. The displayed information will be your local DNS server and its IP address.

You can use -t, -u, -x in the command respectively to show TCP/UDP or UNIX sockets. You can combine each of these with “a” to show the connected and listening sockets. This command gives information about all TCP, UDP, and UNIX socket connections. It traces the route to the specified destination and identifies each hop in it. If your network is weak, it recognizes the point where the network is weak. This can be however set externally by the user using ifconfig. Every system in the world is now connected through a network.

What are basic network commands?

You can click on any of the commands to learn what it does and see its parameters. The “ip route” command can also be used to add or delete routes from the table, but with the same notes as when we used “ip link” to change the MTU of an interface. You’ll need admin rights to run the command, and any changes made will not be maintained after a restart. But this can still be very handy when troubleshooting or working in the lab. So there you are, a network engineer sitting at the console of a Linux workstation, and you need to explore or change the network configuration.

Typing Hostname at the command prompt returns the local computer name. If you are experiencing problems with network communications, then network statistics can sometimes help point you toward the root cause of the problem. That’s where the aptly windows network engineer named NetStat command comes into play. This command has a number of different functions, but the most useful of these is to display network summary information for the device. To see this type of summary information, just type NetStat -e.

Power Your Business

A simple command to see the currently running processes on a PC, similar to the processes tab in the task manager of Windows. However, tasklist command is more useful for seeing processes of another PC remotely. Although keep in mind that it doesn’t show memory usage in real-time, unlike the task manager. The command driverquery shows the complete list of installed drivers in your PC along with the history of when they were installed. Although the Windows Device Manager is a better tool to fix driver issues, this command can help when you need to track driver installation history. It also tells the time it takes to reach each host, so you can also track network performance issues. You first need to know how to access the command prompt and run commands in it.

You can type help to get a list of the system default commands. This command has a lot of options it’s more complicated than it should be. Check out the w32tm documentation page for more details.

Angry IP Scanner

You may see more than one MAC address depending on how many network-related adapters are on your system. For example, Wi-Fi and Ethernet connections would have separate MAC addresses. If you would like to know more, check out these differences between an IP and MAC address.

The job of the ARP protocol is to map IPs to MAC addresses. It provides a method for hosts on a LAN to communicate without knowing any address and create a cache of information. When a new computer enters the LAN, it receives an IP and updates its ARP cache with the Gateway information. Arp -a When you issue the “arp -a”, you’ll get IP-address-to-mac conversion and the allocation type of all devices in your network. In this tutorial, you will learn the basic networking skills on how to scan a network for IP addresses. We will scan a network with native OS commands, find which addresses were assigned dynamically, which statically, and test their connectivity. The following table lists some important options of the ipconfig command.

Sometimes you can run this command to refresh the GPOs and avoid a reboot but that doesn’t always work. Some of these use multiple switches, refer to the help file shutdown /? The shutdown command does exactly that, it shuts down a computer.

If you want even more information, you can extend results by developing Java plugins. From the list generated by the ARP command, you could ping all the live hosts.

The IPAM is able to produce IP address reconciliation reports that will enable you to update your native DHCP server in case it fails to notice expired address leases. An IP Address Scanner tool helps you with larger demands. These tools are able to map the entire local network, finds live hosts, and to provide the results of the “arp-a” in a clearer format.
